Mistral’s model documentation lists Mistral Large 4 as a public preview released on October 6, 2026. The company describes it as an open-weight, general-purpose multimodal model built with a Mixture-of-Experts architecture. Its model page lists 49 billion active parameters, 1.05 trillion total parameters, a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder and a one-million-token context window.

These are vendor specifications, not a guarantee that the model will be the best fit for every workload. “Open weights” also does not automatically mean that every part of a product stack is open source or free to run. Developers should check the license, hosting options, inference costs, hardware requirements and model lifecycle information before selecting it.

What a long context window can help with

A large context window can let a model consider more material in a single request. That may help with long documents, code repositories or multi-step analysis. It does not ensure that the model will retrieve every relevant detail accurately. Long inputs can increase cost and latency, and important facts still need to be tested against the source material.

Mistral lists features including structured output, function calling, document question answering and agent tools. A development team should evaluate those features against a representative task set. Include edge cases, data privacy requirements, expected response time and how easily a user can correct mistakes. Measure the quality of the full workflow, not just a demo prompt.

Preview means expect change

The model is marked Public Preview, so developers should expect specifications, access or behavior to change. Keep a fallback, pin the model version where possible, and avoid making a preview model the only path for a critical customer workflow. For a small business, the right model is the one that meets a defined need at a predictable cost, with a reliable way to review its output.
